Ridgeview Sibley Medical Center to Host Fall Prevention Workshop for Seniors

Ridgeview Sibley Medical Center will host a seven-week fall prevention workshop for seniors, beginning Thursday, May 2 at Ridgeview Sibley Medical Center in Arlington. Attendees will learn techniques and strategies to prevent falls. All community members are welcome.

Stepping On Fall Prevention Workshop
Ridgeview Sibley Medical Center
601 West Chandler St.
Arlington, MN
Thursday Mornings: 9 – 11 a.m.
Dates: May 2 – June 20 (no class May 30)

Cost: $30 (to purchase a set of weights for you to take home)

Stepping On will help participants identify why they fall and teach different ways to prevent falls, including strength and balance exercises, home safety check suggestions and a medication review. This workshop is for people who have fallen and those who fear falling, although it is not designed for those currently needing assistance with a walker. Participants will leave with improved strength, better balance, and renewed confidence and independence as a result of performing various exercises and sharing personal fall experiences as a group.

The program was developed by a physician in Australia and introduced in the United States by Dr. Jane Mahoney, Executive Director of the Wisconsin Institute for Healthy Aging, with funding from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and other partners. Research has indicated that people who complete the workshop have a 31 percent reduced rate of falls.
